Jake Maedke and Vicious Cycle
Jake Maedke of Ephrata, WA first started out racing dirt bikes when he was young. When he hit his mid-twenties he bought his first mountain bike; within a week’s time Jake was signed up for the Leavenworth Bike and Brew. The love for the thrill of the crowd, and the excitement that racing created fueled his passion for the sport. His first race led him to competing in many more. This inspired him to create Vicious Cycle, born in 2003, with the help of Mike Huedner and Mike Belles. For the first few years they were the only ones riding together under Vicious Cycle promoting the bike club. That didn't last long.
In 2005, Jake took a shot at becoming a legitimate race promoter and hosted his own event called The Beezley Burn. Jakes first race brought in 46 total participants with a good old-fashioned BBQ at Jakes parents’ house to follow. In 2008, the event would grow to 58 participants. This modest start to a flourishing success at being a race event promoter led Jake to host a series of races. Vicious Cycle delivered 11 races throughout the 2013 year drawing in over 1,600 entrants to its events. Maedke’s events provide a huge boost to the various local economies, especially in towns like Roslyn and Ephrata. The races have become a family affair. Even Jake’s oldest daughter races in the mountain bike events.
Vicious Cycle will promote 5 mountain bike races in 2014, The Fat Tire Revolution Series and 4 Grand Fondo Events. The first Grand Fondo will be held in Ephrata on March 16th and is nearly sold out. The other three Grand Fondo events will be hosted in Goldendale, Winthrop, and Leavenworth. You can find out more about Vicious Cycle and The Fat Tire Revolution Series at rideviciouscycle.com.
When asked what style of riding Jake prefers most he responded - a Cyclocross bike on a long rocky road. A X-bike allows him to cover a lot of ground and to see a lot of the back roads you wouldn’t get to experience otherwise. Jake’s favorite route to ride is Vicious Cycle’s Ephrata Grand Fondo course. The course has a perfect mix of gravel, climbing, cliffs, rock formations, and scenery. He loves the local favorite Number Two Canyon when mountain biking and referred to it as “World Class”.
We want to congratulate Jake and Vicious Cycle on the accomplishments that have been made and welcome you to join one of his events soon.
